Mighty Max continues to shine

Four-year-old Max du Preez continues to beat the odds as he slowly makes progress after suffering a major brain injury

AFTER being told their four-year-old son may never walk, talk or live a normal life again, former Empangeni residents Frans and Danni du Preez were left at a crossroads.
But through the power of hope, faith, continued prayer and excellent Occupational Therapy at the Sunny Hill Rehabilitation Centre in Canada, little Max du Preez is now making considerable progress.
Despite suffering a critical fall that left him with a serious brain injury just one month after the family’s emigrating, Max is slowly learning to function again.
Improvements in eating, drinking and acknowledgment of small things such as turning the pages of a book and pointing out various animals may seem small, but highlight exceptional progress.
‘The doctors’ prognosis was dismal; most of the details we have blocked from our minds,’ said Danni.
‘But we do remember his closing line: ‘Whatever Max achieves is up to Max’, and this is the prognosis we have chosen to work with.’
Max has also begun using a walker which allows him more freedom and assists him with learning how to sit again.
‘It is such a joy to watch his daily achievements – no matter how small, we celebrate!’

Ongoing support
Although Max is making progress daily, there is still a long road ahead and the long-term prognosis is still not known.
Over 230 people have donated almost $19,500 to assist Max with his recovery and the page is still open and donations will continue to be accepted while Max requires treatment.
