WATCH: Nail-biting crocodile escape

Best escape ever? Watch this buck escape death by centimetres

A ST LUCIA tour guide captured amazing footage of a waterbuck escaping the clutches of a hungry crocodile by mere centimetres.

The video was taken by Deiric Walsh, an 18-year tour guide veteran with many stories to tell, who said he had never filmed anything like this.

‘Hopefully I will again one day. I’ve seen some interesting things, but never such an interesting finish.’

The video starts off with Deiric, who works for St Lucia Safaris and operates as a relief skipper for Advantage Tours and Charters, together with some tourists noticing the waterbuck in the water and the crocodile speeding towards it from a distance at Lake St Lucia.

Deiric can be heard telling the safari goers the croc could ‘get it’.

The tourists are then heard egging on the hapless buck, shouting encouragement.

For almost 30 seconds it appears as if the waterbuck doesn’t stand a chance.

Miraculously, despite powerful swimming by the crocodile, the buck manages to prance out onto the bank with the predator breathing down its neck.

Throughout the video, the waterbuck remains cool and calm.

As it escaped into the bushes, the tourists can be heard celebrating.

‘It was amazing, it was a great ice breaker,’ said Deiric.

‘When the waterbuck escaped the tourists were hugging each other, laughing and talking about the experience. They were totally exhilarated.’

‘They had never seen anything like that in their lives before and somehow it instantly bonded everyone. It was great.’

‘Imagine what the reaction would have been had the waterbuck been a second slower.’
