UPDATE: Brave to the Max

Max du Preez continues to defy odds as he recovers from a serious brain injury

ALMOST two months after a critical fall left Max du Preez (4) with a serious brain injury, the young fighter continues to make progress with his recovery.

Left in a medically induced coma just weeks after emigrating to Canada with his family – former Empangeni residents Frans and Danni du Preez and his brother Zach – Max is now undergoing rehabilitation at the Sunny Hill Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver.

A massive breakthrough has been regaining his strength throughout his body, especially his neck.
‘Max’s vision has started to return which we are super excited about,’ said Danni in a recent update on his online ‘Go Fund Me’ campaign, opened by his uncle Gert du Preez.

‘Three weeks ago he had little to no vision, but now he is even starting to track movements.

‘His left side (his weak side) and particularly his left leg are starting to move, especially when he is frustrated.’

His speech therapist has now begun taste and swallow tests as he essentially needs to learn how to eat again.

‘I long to hear him say mom or dad, or just talk in general. I miss his voice,’ said Danni.

Last weekend Max enjoyed a visit to the organic farmers’ market – his first trip outside since his accident.
Continued support

Throughout Zululand, online prayer groups and messages of support have been flooding in for the popular little boy, his brother and his parents.

‘Our hearts are overwhelmed with the support, love and generosity shown to our family.’

The fund-raising campaign, which will see all funds received go towards Max’s medical treatment and recovery, has reached $16,725 with 189 donations.
