Protest roundup – areas to avoid

Several areas around the province have been declared 'no-go zones'

MULTIPLE areas of the province have this morning been declared ‘no go zones’ as service delivery protests take hold.

Jozini

All roads to Jozini are closed.

Residents are protesting against water shortages that have plagued the area for more than a year.

They took to the streets on Monday, demanding water stand pipes and a meeting with Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC, Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

KwaDukuza

Motorists were advised to avoid the R102 between Tongaat and Stanger as violent protestors were spotted in numerous areas.

Intelligence from police in the area suggests that residents want KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu to step down.

According to a message circulated on crime groups,  several roads were closed and Taxi Associations could not guarantee commuter safety as talks with protestors had failed.

‘Intel received is that a councillor’s home and municipal buildings may be set on fire,’ read the message.

Further warnings were issued for the Sundumbili and iSithebe areas.

At this stage all N2 routes are believed to be clear and safe.
