Toddler burns to death

The family suspects the connection cables the mother used to connect power from another house caused the inferno.

AN 18 month old toddler died when the room in which he was sleeping went up in flames at Ndabayakhe Reserve, outside Empangeni on recently.

The mother of the child reportedly went out to have her hair braided, leaving her sleeping little boy alone, while other children were playing in the yard.

The family suspects the connection cables the mother used to connect power from another house caused the inferno.

Family spokesperson Eric Mzimela said the other members of the family realised something was amiss when they noticed smoke emanating from the room.

‘When they rushed to find out what was wrong, they found the bed was on fire, and the baby was already engulfed by flames.

They tried to put out the fire, using water but it was too late,’ a distraught Mzimela said.

According to Mzimela the little boy was buried last Sunday.

The family thanks the Dela Ngokubona KZN Business Forum for assisting them with funeral costs.

Empangeni SAPS spokesperson Capt Mbongeni Mdlalose said an inquest into the cause of death is being carried out.
