UPDATE: ‘Charlie’ the baby hippo is a happy chappy

All is well with Charlie the hippo baby

LIKE all babies, the new-born hippo rescued in Richards Bay two weeks ago is now suckling his bottle with content and thriving under the loving care of a renowned wildlife expert.

The brave little fighter, now named ‘Charlie’, was first noticed by a local man who was crossing the shallow waters of the lake between Mzingazi and Mandlazini.

Good Samaritan, Mr Ngema, got the fright of his life when the abandoned little animal burst through the reeds and rushed to him for comfort.

He alerted Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife rangers, who then took turns babysitting through the night, waiting for mom to return – but she never did.

The big baby was transported to Thula Thula Rhino Orphanage and handed over to wildlife specialist, Karen Trendler, who gives regular updates of his progress on social media.

Charlie arrived weak and hungry, about 48 hours after his rescue, but has since regained his strength and is seizing life with gusto.

He reportedly loves the outdoors and has a hearty appetite.

Meanwhile, local men who are familiar with the area, say it is a hotspot for bush meat hunters with dogs, and that Charlie’s survival was a miracle.
