Alleged truck fraud accused in court

Richards Bay truck fraud accused appear in court

A MAN alleged to have masterminded a major truck fraud scam appeared in the Richards Bay District Court on Tuesday.

Terrence Govender (33), also known to police as ‘Titus’ was tracked down and arrested by Richards Bay detectives, after allegedly fleeing from Richards Bay to Durban and as far as East London, to avoid arrest.

He is facing a plethora of fraud charges reportedly involving different complainants.

The investigation has not been completed but the fraud claims could run into a million Rand – and more complaints are pouring in.

Some of the cases date back to 2014 and some involve complainants from Gauteng.

The State opposed his bail and requested a seven day remand for the investigating officer to verify Govender’s residential details and prepare for the bail application.

The details of the alleged modus operandi will then be placed on record, but it is reported Govender told people he owns a fleet of trucks which are for sale.

The complainants then deposited large amounts into his account, where after Govender allegedly disappeared with the money.

According to Colonel Zenzele Sosibo of Richards Bay SAPS, more complainants are coming forward and claiming that their lives had been ruined as a result of their dealings with the accused.

He reportedly owns a house in Richards Bay from where he pretended to be operating, but the house was left derelict.

The case was remanded until 11 May for bail application.
