Grave situation at eShowe cemetaries

The cemeteries are a far-cry from what should be a place of reflection of loved ones lives.

LACK of maintenance in eShowe’s three cemeteries has once again raised its head as families visiting graves of their loved once have to wade through uncut grass and bushes.

Many of the headstones are barely visible as weeds up to two metre grow on the graves.

The cemeteries are a far-cry from what should be a place of reflection of loved ones lives.

Vandalism

The KwaMondi Norwegian Cemetery was also targeted by vandals last week.

Nineteen of the headstones have been pushed over, breaking them into many pieces.

This is the third time that these graves have been damaged and the motive is unknown.

The damage was reported to Stan Larkan who has personally spent his time and money with the up-keep of the cemetery.

It is often visited by Norwegians during their stay in South Africa.

The cost to repair the damaged headstones could be as high as R100 000, but a formal quote has not yet been obtained.

Garry Oftebro, who has been a regular visitor to the cemetery, was shocked when told of the damage.

He said, ‘This is shocking and a great tragedy. This sort of malicious vandalism is really upsetting.’

The vandalism has been reported to the eShowe SAPS.
