Mtuba court finds men guilty of Durban murder

The accused will spend the next 30 years behind bars

TWO men have been found guilty and each sentenced to 30 years behind bars for a murder and robberies that took place in 2012 in Durban.

In March 2012, two university students were standing on Berea Road at about 9pm.

They were approached by the two accused, Zibuyise Halakahla (20) and Simlindile Mdledle (21), who robbed one student of her cellphone and chased the other with a knife.

A bystander, Elvis Mbambo (45) witnessed the incident and attempted to help the victims.

The accused attacked him, stabbing him 14 times. He died on the scene.

Durban Metro Police, who were patrolling at the time of the incident, saw the suspects and gave chase. Both men were arrested and charged with robbery and murder.

The state successfully opposed bail at their first court appearance and the case was transferred to Mtubatuba High Court.

On 15 April, both Halakahla and Mdledle were found guilty and sentenced to 10 years each for robbery and 20 years each for murder.
