Heavy sentences for hijack kingpins

His accomplices were sentenced to 16 years on each robbery count, and five years on each of the seven kidnapping charges.

THREE KZN hijacking kingpins will spend the rest of their days behind bars following the heavy sentences meted out at the Mtubatuba High Court on Friday.

Sbusiso Thilili Mzimela (30), Themba Hlongwane (30) and Sthembiso Thwala (26) were each found guilty on three counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances, and seven counts of kidnapping at Mtunzini High Court on Thursday.

Mzimela, believed to be the mastermind behind a series of hijackings around the province, was sentenced to 20 years on each robbery count, and five years each on seven kidnapping charges. He is already serving out a long sentence – he apparently escaped from three maximum security prisons around KZN – and now collectively faces 95 years imprisonment.

His accomplices, Hlongwane and Thwala, were sentenced to 16 years on each robbery count, and five years on each of the seven kidnapping charges.

They both face 83 years in prison.
