Armed robberies plague Mtubatuba

Mtuba residents and business owners are urged to be vigilant in the wake of a string of armed robberies

FOLLOWING a string of armed robberies in Mtubatuba and surrounding areas last weekend, police have urged residents to be vigilant and take safety precautions at their homes and businesses.

A cash and carry store in Mtubatuba was broken into over the weekend after the suspects removed roof panels to gain entry and damaged the CCTV system.

Cigarettes and airtime were stolen. The value of the stolen goods, added to the damage caused during the robbery, came to R45 000.

In a separate incident, the owner of a tuck shop in Khula Village was on Monday morning held up at gunpoint by two armed suspects as he was opening the shop.

The suspects ordered him inside the shop where two more suspects had gained entry by cutting the lock. They had stolen cigarettes and airtime to the value of about R6 300.

A Dukuduku tuck shop, thought to be owned by the same person as the Khula Village shop, was also broken into, and cigarettes and airtime to the value of about R3 700 were stolen.

In another incident, two armed robbers approached a man while he was cycling in Khula Village. The suspects held him up with a gun and knife and forced him to hand over his bicycle.

Mtubatuba police officers are investigating cases of armed robbery, but no arrests have yet been made.
