Windmill mishap kills boy

Melmoth SAPS have restored calm and are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

AN eight-year-old boy died on Thursday after getting caught in a windmill in the Dubeni area near Melmoth.

The lower mechanisms of the windmill had been left exposed as it was still under construction to serve as a pump for a borehole, and it is believed the boy was caught in the rotating mechanism when he attempted to drink water which had been pumped to the surface.

A community member discovered his body at around 2.30pm, his arm broken and suffocated to death by his jersey.

The community demanded to know why the area, near the side of a busy road, had not been cordoned off or marked as a construction site. It was also demanded that the windmill be taken down immediately.
