UPDATE: Abandoned baby finds a safe haven

Officials at the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital report she weighs 3.3kg and a full medical examination conducted revealed that she was perfectly healthy.

AFTER a rough start to life in the arms of a street vendor last Wednesday, the newborn baby girl discovered in Byrne Street, Empangeni, is in good health.

Officials at the Lower Umfolozi War Memorial Regional Hospital report she weighs 3.3kg and a full medical examination conducted revealed that she was perfectly healthy.

Working with the police, hospital social workers are investigating the circumstances around the baby’s dumping and are looking to find a suitable home for the child in the interim. The baby’s mother or any other relative has yet to be traced.

‘We encourage women with unwanted pregnancies to visit us prior to delivery and discuss adoption with us,’ said hospital CEO Nqobile Mkhwanazi. ‘It is legal for women to give up their babies for adoption and we will put them in touch with social workers who can find homes for their children.’

Mothers are also referred to the hospital’s social workers for counselling to ensure they are certain and will come to terms with their decision.
