Dumped puppy saved

The cross-breed pup is receiving treatment for a mild case of mange, and will be healthy enough to be put up for adoption next month.

AFTER being called out to save a puppy dumped near one of the busiest roads in the area, officials at the Empangeni SPCA are imploring the community to handle unwanted animals more humanely.

A passing motorist mercifully alerted the SPCA of an abandoned pup, terrified and drenched from the rain, laying on the center island at the John Ross Parkway and N2 intersection last Monday.

Shortly after inspectors rescued the five-month-old pup and brought it back to the SPCA for rehabilitation, they received a phone call from a second motorist claiming to have witnessed the incident.

They reported that a red taxi had pulled up on the island and someone flung the pup out before the taxi continued on its way.

‘The community needs to understand that we are willing to take in unwanted animals,’ said Empangeni SPCA Senior Inspector Roland Fivaz.

‘Please bring them in. If they’ve become a nuisance, rather put them up for adoption than abandon them to be killed on the roads.’
