Fine for no pet licences

Pet licences must be renewed annually

THE Richards Bay SPCA urges all pet owners to ensure their dog and cat licences are up to date and that animals have received their rabies injections.

The licence is a requirement in terms of the municipal bylaws for the keeping of cats and dogs and must be renewed on an annual basis.

Dogs and cats must receive rabies vaccination before the purchase of a licence however, as no licence will be issued without a valid rabies vaccination certificate.

Rabies injections cost R20 and licences are R85 (unsterilized) and R35 (sterilized) each.

According to the SPCA, all dogs and cats from the age of three months must be vaccinated against rabies and owners must purchase a licence by the time the animal is six months old.

These pets must receive three rabies injections before they are a year old and thereafter once a year.

Owners can face a fine of R500 for not vaccinating their pet against rabies or for not having a licence.

The licences are obtainable from the Richards Bay SPCA, Empangeni SPCA and local vets.
