Tricksters sell false housing hopes

City warns on housing scam

FALSE promises of housing will cause huge disappointment for victims of scam artists.

According to City of uMhlathuze Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, queries and complaints have been received from the public who have paid to be on bogus beneficiary lists for proposed housing projects.

‘The Social Compact Committees will inform Council for endorsement when the beneficiary registration processes are ready to commence.

‘At this point in time such processes have not commenced.

‘We distance ourselves from these allegations and urge people not entertain such initiatives.

‘In terms of the Constitution and the National Housing Act, no member of the public is supposed to pay any amount of money in order to be registered as a beneficiary for a government housing project.

‘The housing beneficiary administration process is the responsibility of the municipality guided by National and Provincial policies.

‘Residents will be officially informed through Ward Councillors and the media when the registration process has commenced,’ said Ncalane.

‘The City has been made aware of some individuals who are circulating these lists and using them for cheap political gains.

‘We urge our residents to remain vigilant of such crooks.’
