Promoting crime awareness among senior citizens

Human trafficking and crime awareness rolled out to senior citizen communities

SENIOR citizens can play a crucial role in the fight against crime and human trafficking through observation, reporting and creating awareness among family and friends.

The valuable input of the senior community was highlighted during a joint awareness campaign between SAPS Richards Bay, represented by Captain Debbie Ferreira, and Pastor Caroline Pitout of Freedom Generation SA on Wednesday.

Human trafficking and crime awareness talks were rolled out to Brackenham and the Mzingazi Retirement Village, where groups shared their observations, insights, experiences and concerns on these topics.

Captain Ferreira gave a practical demonstration in self-defence and provided with tips against crime, specifically aimed at protecting the civilian community using everyday objects within reach.

Although the presentation was humorous, especially because the villain volunteer was Pastor Pitout, the message was a sobering reminder that every community member must take precautions against becoming a victim of crime.

Pastor Pitout spoke on the topic of bonded labour, sex and organ trafficking and the dangers social media pose, especially for teens.

She urged the seniors to spread the message to heir children, grandchildren and friends.
