Tourism tackles drowning hotspot

Bay Hall drownings a concern to tourism

THE City of uMhlathuze’s Community Tourism Organisation (uCTO) will take the lead in bringing together plans to end the tragic drowning deaths at the Bay Hall area in Richards Bay.

The matter was raised as one of urgency at the monthly meeting of the uCTO on Tuesday.

‘We cannot sit back and allow more deaths to occur. Not only is it heart-breaking for families, it is also a blot on our tourism aspirations,’ said acting chairman Mandla Magagula.

uCTO members will form a task team from a variety of role players to discuss possible interventions.

Other items of note at the meeting were:

• The Tuzi Gazi Waterfront tourism office is once again up and running with the appointment of intern Lihle Mavundla, who will man the office weekdays between 8am and 4pm.

Besides providing information and brochures, her immediate task is to increase the uCTO membership base and all sectors in the hospitality field are reminded that membership is now compulsory to get on the provincial database.

Lihle can be contacted on 083 6658380 or email mchunus@umhlathuze.gov.za for more information.

• The uCTO is now part of a steering committee for the proposed upgrade of the historically significant King Cetshwayo Monument at Port Durnford.

• A tourism clean-up campaign is being planned for 20 April, when four designated sites will be attended to with the City’s Waste Management section.

• A tourism stand is planned for the Dolos Festival, while the uCTO will also feature at the forthcoming Tourism Indaba.

• The uCTO will participate in events linked to the arrival of the floating book fair ‘Logos Hope’ on 5 May.
