SPCA saves puppy from pit latrine

Puppy rescued from pit latrine

A MZINGAZI man walking in the vicinity of a community pit latrine on Tuesday night was taken aback when he suddenly heard the harrowing cries of a puppy.

Mondle Nxumalo discovered a six-week-old pup covered in waste matter at the bottom of the four-metre deep long-drop toilet.

He immediately contacted the Richards Bay SPCA to come to the rescue.

Inspector Shelly Prinsloo and assistant Jabu Mlondo used an animal control pole to position a noose around the puppy’s waist and lift her out of the hole.

She was rushed back to the SPCA premises for a bath and ‘well-deserved dinner’.

‘There is no door to the latrine

and the toilet seat is low from the ground, so we suspect the puppy went

in to investigate and accidentally fell in,’ said Prinsloo.

‘She was seen during the day so fortunately she was not stuck in there for longer than a few hours.

‘The puppy was traumatised, but is doing very well and we would like to thank Mondle for calling us out and being of great assistance to us in retrieving her from the latrine.

‘She did not suffer any injuries, but we are keeping her on a seven-day probation period to ensure her optimal health and give the owner the opportunity to come forward.

‘After this period we will put her up for adoption.’
