Happy ending for little Peanut

Residents must report stray cats

A SINGLE stray cat can can have six kittens every six months – resulting in thousands of strays being born over just two years.’

So says Empangeni animal lover Magda du Plessis, who on Wednesday visited the Zululand Observer offices with a stray kitten rescued from the industrial area

Du Plessis was contacted late on Tuesday afternoon by an Empangeni business owner who reported a newborn kitten roaming around his industrial property.

Workers said the mother of the kitten had not been seen for three days.

Du Plessis picked up the kitten on Wednesday morning and took it to the Zululand Veterinary Hospital, where it was given a clean bill of health and quickly fed.

This tale – unlike so many – had a happy ending, when ZO employee Jocelyn Burger immediately agreed to adopt the little kitten, naming him Peanut.

Du Plessis encouraged residents and business owners to report stray cats to the SPCA.

‘Strays need to undergo health checks for diseasea and be sterilized. That is the only way to prevent inbreeding, starvation and over-breeding. The SPCA works hard to see to the welfare of our animals and it is our responsibility to ensure they are made aware of any problem areas.’
