Dukuduku land seller awaits judgement

Induna charged with illegally selling plots of land in the Dukuduku Forest since 2006, will hear his fate in June.

INDUNA Timothy Maphanga, charged with illegally selling plots of land in the Dukuduku Forest since 2006, will hear his fate in June.

The former IFP councillor at Mtubatuba Municipality was formally charged with contravening the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE) and with fraud.

Since 2006 he reportedly sold plots of land to settlers in Dukuduku Forest just outside St Lucia.

A community leader and churchgoer, Maphanga allegedly sold land to eight or ten people, however only four testified at the trial which has taken a long time to make its way through the legal system.

Unconfirmed reports state those witnesses who failed to testify had been intimidated and forcefully prevented from testifying.

The matter was postponed to 13 June for judgement at the Richards Bay Regional Court.
