Unity among artists encouraged

Various artists descended in Empangeni for the first Arts and Culture Summit on Thursday

THE City of uMhlathuze held the first Arts and Culture Summit at Umfolozi Casino Resort in Empangeni on Thursday.

The purpose was to develop and train artists such as painters, poets, musicians and hand craft makers, to be entrepreneurs within the creative sector.

The platform served to open new channels of development within uMhlathuze, and tackle barriers which prevent growth among artists.

It aimed at building powerful and positive relationships among artists and the City arts and cultural community.

According to the City Mayor Cllr Mduduzi Mhlongo, local artists need national and international exposure.

‘Art is a form of communication which convey strong messages. Our artists are among the best in the country, and it is time we work to make them known them to the world. This summit is to create dialogue, expose artists to various businesses and information to acquire funding,’ he said.

‘Artists need to understand the role and responsibilities of all spheres of government,’

He also advised them to protect their crafts, and to fight the challenge of substance abuse within the creative industry.

‘Because most artists don’t understand business, they are normally taken for granted.

‘This has a negative impact on their lives, which can lead to the beginning of drug abuse.

‘They must be able to know how to protect their intellectual properties and register their work, which can ensure they earn a decent living,’ he said.

Mhlongo also encouraged unity and hard work among artists.

‘We must work together, and build on each others differences.

‘It is important to see diversity as a strength rather than a weakness,’ he concluded.

Provincial and district representatives of the Department of Arts and Culture, City’s Deputy Mayor Vera Gumbi and Spear Mfundo Mthenjana were also part of the summit.
