Mine offers R100 000 reward after arson

R100 000 reward offers as mine shutdown continues amid violent attacks

ZULULAND Anthracite Colliery (ZAC) is now offering a R100 000 reward for information that will lead to the arrest of arsonists who torched several offices at the Ngwabe Shaft near Ulundi.

The mine on Monday announced a temporary suspension of operations owing to the ongoing ‘plague of criminal activity’.

On two separate occasions, suspects unknown gained entry to the premises around the shaft and set offices alight.

The second incident, on 23 March, resulted in one employee sustaining severe burns to his left hand.

‘The violence at the mine is believed to be orchestrated by a group of 15 to 20 youths who are demanding to be employed,’ said ZAC Managing Director, Niels Kristensen on Friday.

‘It is unfortunate that thousands of residents in the area are being made to suffer through the violent actions of a handful of people,’ he said, referring to the mine’s 1 300 employees who support around 80 000 people in local communities.

Anyone who has information is urged to contact ZAC on 082 4195143 or 082 4195210.

ZAC has confirmed that the identity of the informer will be kept in the strictest confidence.
