UPDATE: Beach barrier wall almost complete

Geobag wall near completion at Alkantstrand

THE last ‘bricks’ in the geobag dune defence barrier under construction at Alkantstrand in Richards Bay will be laid over the next week.

The wall now extends to about 200 metres north of the lifeguard house and will have been put to a stern test during the spring tides over the long weekend.

Built by the City of uMhlathuze through contractors Leomat Construction, the wall comprises hundreds of 2.8-ton sand-filled geobags laid from a foundation one metre below sea level and layered to form an artificial slope preventing high tide wave action from eroding the dune face.
