Don’t let security worries spoil your Easter holiday

Going away this Easter? Ensure your memories are kept safe by following these guidelines

THE Easter holidays are just around the corner, and most people are looking forward to spending time with friends and family during this time.

While away making memories, ensure all the ones treasured in your home are kept safe, by following a few pointers.

The first step is to make sure your alarm system is working properly.

‘We advise our clients to test their alarm systems regularly so that any problems can be identified and fixed as soon as possible. This is especially important if you have done any renovations or alterations to your property recently,’ says Les Rungasamy, ADT Security’s branch manager in the Richards Bay & Empangeni Area.

Criminals are always on the lookout for properties that appear to be unoccupied, adds Rungasamy, and suggests that holiday makers inform their neighbours if they plan to be away for an extended period of time. This is so that your neighbours can keep an eye out for any problems or suspicious activity in and around your property. Security service providers should also be alerted, so that patrollers are aware of your absence and remain alert to potential criminal activity.

It’s not always easy to remember all these safety tips, which is why ADT has come up with a 12 point checklist to cover your security concerns. This includes making sure your passive sensors don’t get blocked by bushes or trees in your garden, or that walls don’t turn into hiding places for criminals.
‘High walls, electric fencing and other security measures are be practical solutions to protecting your property, but they could hinder emergency access should an incident occur. Get in touch with your security service provider about alternate access options such as lock boxes,’ says Rungasamy.

Rungasamy also suggests making sure that your security service provider has the correct and updated contact details for you or whoever would be looking after your property.

“It is important that the correct people can be contacted immediately in case there are any emergencies or attempted break-ins at your property,” he explains.
