Shembe books launched

Call for more writers

HISTORIAN and well known academic Prof Jabulani Maphalala has challenged the Nazareth Baptised Church community to create more public awareness about the origins, history and relevance of the church, also known as the Shembes.

Maphalala was speaking at the launch of three books on the church at the Empangeni Civic Centre recently.

The first book titled Impilo, Umlando Nezimanga zikaShembe (The Life, History and the Miracles of Shembe) was written by uThungulu District Municipality Councillor Bhekisisa Mthethwa, who is a devout member of the church and who previously acted as its spokesperson.

The book focuses on the history of the founder of the church, Umqaliwendlela, and the way he structured the foundation of the church, which now boasts a membership of more than eight million worshippers.

The other two books, titled JG Shembe (ILanga) and AK Shembe (INyanga yeZulu), were written by Advocate HT Mnyandu.

The two books focus on the history and sermons of the two late church leaders.

Lauding the publication of the three books, Maphalala said this was long overdue.

‘We hope this is not the end, but the beginning of bigger things to come. We need more writers who will tell the real story about this church.

‘It is not correct to have people who come from other religions writing about your own history.’

He said Shembe has and continues to touch the lives of many South Africans, including people of colour.

He commended the church for promoting and preserving the rich history of Zulu customs, culture and traditions.
