Mayor summonsed to explain lack of water delivery

uMkhanyakude Mayor Jeff Vilane and his technical team expected to appear in the Mtubatuba High Court tomorrow

MTUBATUBA police officers yesterday (Wednesday) served a summons on uMkhanyakude Mayor Jeff Vilane and his technical team, ordering them to appear in the Mtubatuba High Court tomorrow (Friday) to explain to the court why there is no water in the district.

uMkhanyakude’s water shortage has been widely publicised and criticised, yet nothing appears to have been done.

Residents relying on the Mtubatuba waterworks have not had a drop of running water for a week now.

While there have been reports of water in some parts of Mtubatuba this morning, access to this precious resource is intermittent at best.

uMkhanyakude District Municipality was placed under administration in October and the close-out report of outgoing Administrator Bamba Ndwandwe was last week leaked to the Zululand Observer.

It stated that financial mismanagement and no evidence of operations and maintenance programmes relating to water and sanitation services were main reasons for the lack of water.
