Community sets iNduna’s homestead ablaze

There are reportedly disputes over succeeding nkosis and eligible ndunas within this community

A DISGRUNTLED community in the far north of KwaZulu-Natal on Friday night and Saturday morning all but destroyed the homestead, including two vehicles, of their local iNduna Mzweleni Mathenjwa.

The incident occurred at Manyiseni in the Mathenjwa traditional area which borders Swaziland.

A local shop in the area was also burnt down.

Jozini police and fire and rescue responded, but owing to the distance were unable to save everything.

The unrest is suspected to be related to disputes within the community’s own traditional structures.

KZN MEC for Community Safety and Liaison, Willies Mchunu, as well as provincial SAPS, reportedly restored calm in the area on Saturday after mediating between the disputing parties.

The ANC in KZN condemned the incident.

The party said it has called on government and ANC-led municipalities to carefully analyse these protests and address them properly.

‘While we understand the right to protest, we know there are some elements that seek to hide behind genuine community complaints to advance narrow self-serving agendas’.
