UPDATE: ARV dealer in the dock

The suspect will appear in court for a formal bail application

NGWELEZANE Magistrate’s Court will today (Friday) hear a bail application from the 38-year-old woman arrested for selling stolen anti-retroviral medication.

In a sting operation conducted by a number of police units in Ngwelezane last week, the woman was caught with bottles of ARV medication worth more than R300 000 meant for State HIV/Aids patients.

It is believed whoonga drug dealers buy the ARVs to mix into the highly addictive street drug.

The suspect will face charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property.

She will also be charged under Section 22 A of the Medicines and Related Substances Control Act dealing with the prescription and issue of scheduled medication.

At this stage police do not wish to release her name as it could hamper the investigation into the origin of the ARVs.
