Community warned of watershedding

drought worsens in uMhlathuze

THE community of Iniwe Reserve in Ward 29 has been issued a stern warning to use water sparingly, as drought continues to hit hard in most areas within the City of uMhlathuze.

Addressing a community meeting held on Sunday, Ward 29 Cllr Mthunzi Mathenjwa said the drought had given the municipality sleepless night and he urged residents to meet the municipality halfway.

‘The reality is that the drought situation is getting worse and both Lake Cubhu and Lake Mzingazi dams are not improving.

‘We appeal to you to play your part by saving water as if it was the last drop. We know of some people who continue to waste the very little water we have.

‘This water wastage has to stop, or we will be heading for water shedding,’ warned Mathenjwa.

Mathenjwa also reported about the progress made regarding the electrification of 343 new houses for Ward 29.

‘I’m pleased to announce that we have so far been able to electrify 280 houses, and work is still in progress to complete the remaining houses,’ he said.

Mathenjwa also informed residents about the new demarcation which will see the City of uMhlathuze with a total of 34 wards, compared to the current 30, but said this did not affect Iniwe Reserve.

In response the community appealed to Cllr Mathenjwa for a local clinic, dustbins, post office and a library in the area, saying the demand for these was increasing.
