Woman claims attack was politically motivated

Mathaba, an Nseleni branch committee member of the Inkatha Freedom Party, alleges she was attacked because she was wearing a political party branded T-shirt.

AN Nseleni woman was stabbed in the head in what she claims was a politically motivated attack.

Zandile Mathaba (42) has opened a criminal case at the Nseleni Police Station after she was violently attacked on Wednesday evening by a man known to her.

Mathaba, an Nseleni branch committee member of the Inkatha Freedom Party, alleges she was attacked because she was wearing a political party branded T-shirt.

‘I was at the shop when the suspect greeted me. As I responded he began hurling insults at me.

‘I asked him why he was insulting me and he told me it is because I am an IFP member.

‘This was not the first time he had directed insults at me and I warned him I going to report him to the police.

‘He drew a knife and stabbed me on the head while I tried to defend myself.’

She was taken to the Nseleni Clinic for treatment.

Responding to the incident, IFP Councillor DA Nxumalo said he was shocked and saddened by the attack, especially in the build-up to the local government elections.

‘I am appealing to IFP members to give the police time to investigate the matter and not to take the law into their own hands.

‘I urge the police to probe this matter with urgency,’ said Nxumalo.
