UPDATE: Neighbour shot dead responding to crime

Police are being assisted by CPI and community members in a search for the housebreaker

RICHARDS Bay police are investigating the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of a Veldenvlei man this morning.
The man and his wife had responded to a call for help from a female neighbour living across from their Arum Lily home.
The woman had been painting her home when a housebreaking suspect entered her premises.
He had apparently jumped over a number of electric fence and razor wire walls while attempting to elude arrest after breaking into a home behind the woman’s house.
He had been wounded by occupants of the house but, bleeding profusely, managed to escape from the area.
Police are being assisted by CPI and community members in a search for the housebreaker, who was believed to be unarmed and was wearing only a pair of denims.
Meanwhile, traumatised family and friends have rallied in support of the deceased man’s wife, who was present during the shooting and was wounded in the hand.

The Zululand Observer has more details of the incident, including the name of the deceased but have been requested by the Richards Bay SAPS to withhold certain information pending their investigation.
