Seamen burnt in explosion on ship

Two men are still recovering from second-degree burns at Netcare The Bay Hospital

TWO young Asian men on Sunday sustained serious burn injuries in a suspected gas explosion on their vessel anchored 11kms offshore from Richards Bay.

Netcare 911 paramedics flew out to the bulk carrier after 5pm and landed on the ship’s helicopter pad to address the patients’ second-degree burns.

The victims, estimated to be in their mid-twenties, were then flown to the helicopter base at Alkantstrand where awaiting ICE and Meditrax ambulances rushed them to Netcare The Bay Hospital.

The men will reportedly remain in the hospital under treatment for some weeks before they will be able to return to their home countries.
