Meerensee man injured while trying to save pet in dog attack

Owner hurt while trying to free his Jack Russel from bull terrier's grip

IN AN attempt to free his pet from the clutches of an attacking Bull Terrier, a Richards Bay man punched the dog in the face subsequently fracturing his hand.

This is according to Richards Bay SPCA Chairperson Anne Maré Coetzee who was in the vicinity of Kitefish and Krewelkring streets in Meerensee when the incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon.

‘The Bull Terrier had escaped from his property and attacked a Jack Russell that was walking down the street with its owners and their baby.
‘It gripped the little dog’s neck and the man attacked the dog to protect his animal.
‘The man was bleeding severely from the blow, but thankfully his wife, baby and their second dog were not attacked or hurt.
‘The owner was taken to hospital and I believe he sustained a broken hand while all the dogs were taken to a local vet for a check-up.

‘The dogs did not suffer any puncture wounds but were traumatised by the incident.’ said Coetzee.
