The art of movement is Judy’s passion

Meet Empangeni dance teacher Judy Bryden

Zululand youngsters can hit the floor with Judy Bryden – dance teacher, gymnastic champion and tattoo artist.

This bubbly dance instructor from Empangeni started dancing at the young age of seven.

She started with ballet classes and soon after moved to gymnastics.

Owing to her love of movement, Bryden later got involved in modern dance.

She became a qualified dance teacher at 23 and was registered with the Association of International Dance Teachers – an organisation represented in Israel, Canada England and New Zealand.

After showcasing her talents on various stages and perfecting her skills, she than received an Advance Associate qualification.

‘Even though I studied medical technology at Pretoria Technikon, dance remained a big part of my life. For me it’s a way to relax and destress. I exercise while having a good time,’ she says.

Through her studio, Star Dancers, Bryden teaches more than 40 children the art of dance.

She teaches modern and hip hop dance in four studios around Zululand.

‘I encourage children to participate in extra activities. In my class, I always encourage individuality and for them to use dance as a freedom of expression. Dance is an avenue for children to express themselves,’

Judy hosts dance shows every second year and uses the platform to raise funds for charity organisations such as Hospice, SPCA and Save the Rhino fund.

She is currently a member of the Association of Zululand Dance Teachers.

At 68, Judy still dances like a youngster and outshines many when she hits the floor.
