Tip-off leads to firearms recovery

Bay cops in double weapons recovery

FOLLOWING an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public, police at Richards Bay discovered two firearms and a large quantity of ammunition at a house in Birdswood on Sunday.

One of the guns had been reported missing at Vryheid some years ago, while the other – though apparently unlicensed – could be traced to an owner.

Among a number of boxes of small arms ammunition and unloaded cartridges there were also many loose bullets of various calibre, including R5 and AK47 rounds.

The SAPS members did not search long before finding the haul, well hidden under a kitchen cupboard.

A resident at the house was taken to the station for questioning, amid claims the stash had been placed there by a previous tenant who had been evicted.

The circumstances are being investigated.

The recovery follows another success by the Richards Bay uniform branch on Friday when a robbery suspect was apprehended at a house in Veldenvlei with a weapon in his possession.
