Incorrect electricity token costs customer

Customer left to deal with costly prepaid electricity token mistake

A RICHARDS Bay resident is dreading the thought of having to cut her losses of R1 500 after an incorrect meter number was entered when she purchased electricity tokens from a prepaid electricity vendor earlier this month.

Dorothy Koekemoer had verbally given the cashier at a Richards Bay supermarket the meter details, only to discover later they were incorrect when her box refused to accept the vouchers.

The supermarket as well as the City of uMhlathuze advised that the vouchers could not be refunded or reversed.

‘I have been going back and forth since 2 January to have the matter resolved, but nothing can be done.

‘Usually when I make electricity purchases the cashiers read back my address to ensure it is correct, but this particular time she did not and just processed the transaction.

‘The municipality said they could send someone out to have the tokens reversed, but it would cost more than R700 and suggested I try to sell the vouchers to the owner holding the meter account.

‘I approached the unit owners but they said they only spend about R300 per month and could not afford to buy this sum from me.

‘I had to fork out extra money for electricity as I have a granny flat with tenants and must always ensure there is sufficient electricity in the main building,’ she said.
