Meet Hluma High School top achiever, Mondli Myeni (18)

HLUMA High School Grade 12 top achiever Mondli Myeni (18), has a wonderful future thanks to his perseverance.

Despite his disadvantaged background, the young lad from eMabhuyeni Reserve in KwaMthethwa area, proved anything was possible.

He received seven distinctions and outshone 129 other pupils in his class.

His accomplishment placed him among top achievers in uThungulu District.

Even though his journey to sweet success was troubled with many challenges, Mondli said his grandmother always motivated him to keep his eyes on the prize.

‘After my mom died when I was in Grade 9, gogo was all I had. She gave me unconditional support even though she was struggling, and taking care of four other people with her pension grant,’ said Mondli.

‘All I want to do now is to work even harder and take care of my family. I want to give them a better life,’

According to Mondli, unwavering support from his educators gave him the strength to work hard.

‘My teachers went beyond the call of duty. They ensured we all had study materials, and took time to conduct afternoon and holiday classes,’ he said.

Hluma High School Head of Humanities, Dingaan Mncube, described Mondli as a leader, who excelled all year-round while assisting his peers.

‘We always saw potential in him and we are truly proud of his achievement. We hope people will realise his accomplishment and support him,’ said Mncube.

Mondli will be studying mechanical engineering at Wits University.

His dream is to open a workshop in Richards Bay and create employment for many.
