Missing dogs await owners at SPCA

Six pets fled from New Year’s Eve fireworks

THE usual big bang in Richards Bay on New Year’s Eve has again resulted in traumatised pets bolting from their homes.

Six dogs – two Jack Russels, two crossbreeds, a terrier and a Bulldog – are still waiting for their owners at the SPCA kennels near the Steel Bridge.

According to the Richards Bay SPCA Manager Kobie Littlejohn, despite the resounding call from many local pet lovers for revelers not to set off fireworks, it ‘was a loud end to 2015’.

‘It was the worst in Birdswood, Arboretum and Wildenweide.

‘We urge pet owners returning from holiday to come see if their missing pets are with us.

‘They have now been waiting for nearly two weeks.’

Littlejohn also reminded the public the animal welfare does have kennels to keep their pets safe while enjoying a getaway.

‘They are R45 for cats; R50 for small dogs, R55 for medium dogs and R60 for large dogs and we are happy to take them for daily walks when requested.’

She added all dogs at home need sufficient water and shade in the midst of Zululand’s sweltering summer to avoid dehydration and sunstroke.

Donations saves day

After a desperate call for much needed adult and puppy dog pellets, the SPCA team sincerely thanked supporters for their food donations over the past two weeks.

‘We received enough food to last us for about two months and we are extremely appreciative of your contributions to help lost, injured, abused and abandoned paws and claws.

‘More dog food is always welcome as we depend on the kindness and compassion of the community!’

To make a donation, food can be dropped off at the Richards Bay SPCA from Monday to Friday between 8am and 3pm, or on a Saturday between 8am to 12pm.

To request the collection of food, contact the offices on 035 7532086.
