Empangeni water pressure lowered

Residents are expected to adjust to a change in water pressure for the time being

EMPANGENI residents experienced a noticeable reduction in water pressure last week.

The effects of the current drought and failure by large sections of the community to take water preservation seriously, will now be passed on to residents as the City of uMhlathuze implements water restrictions through reduced water pressure.

Residents in the Grantham Park area were the first to feel the effect, with two homes briefly experiencing a complete water cut.

Municipal Communications Manager, Mdu Ncalane, said pressure was dropped from the standard two bars to one bar on Tuesday last week.

‘After our municipal workers received complaints from homeowners while on site, we made the decision to increase the pressure slightly on Wednesday afternoon in the Grantham Park area,’ said Ncalane.

In an effort to avoid a similar problem faced by residents in Ballito, the reduction of water pressure will allow homes access to water at reduced speed, however there are no scheduled water cuts at this stage.

‘We have a very good system whereby the person who complains first is used as a guideline as to the limit the pressure can be in certain areas.’

‘We then try our best to accommodate everyone accordingly.’

Although only temporary, the decision to increase the pressure will only be made after sufficient rain falls.

‘For now everything may take slightly longer, such as showering or using the washing machine, but an adjustment had to be made.’
