KZN among worst as Matric pass rate drops 5%

It’s D-Day for the Class of 2015 as Matric results are released today

THE national Matric exam pass rate has dropped 5.1% in 2015 to 70.7% from 75.8% in 2014.

This according to Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga who held a press conference on Tuesday evening to announce the figures.

KZN is second worst overall with 60.7%, while Eastern Cape was the worst performing province with 56.8%.

The Western Cape took the top spot with an 84.7% pass rate, followed narrowly by Gauteng with 84.2%.

The Free State took third position with 81.6% followed by North West with 81.5%.

Next was Mpumalanga with 78.6%, Northern Cape with 69.4% and Limpopo just ahead of KZN with 65.9%.

According to Motshekga the three worst performing provinces that were home to 53% of pupils and are the country’s three biggest rural provinces, caused a 9% drop in the pass rate.
