Big trophy haul for St Lucia anglers

St Lucia's anglers were rewarded for their part in a successful year for angling

A SUCCESSFUL year for Zululand’s anglers has drawn to a close and at the St Lucia Ski Boat Club’s annual prize-giving, St Lucia-based anglers were rewarded for their efforts.

Numerous Catch of the Year awards were issued, including ‘Dup’ du Preez’ 23kg dorado, Willem Meintjies’ 30kg yellow-fin tuna and Thinus van Wyk’s 24kg wahoo.

Gawie Dippenaar, Chris Viviers and Rudi Moolman each gained club colours after participating in the sailfish inter-club tournament this year.

After winning the inter-provincial sailfish tournament, Brad McLaren (captain), Divan Breedt, George Breedt and Jacques Joubert were each awarded provincial colours.

McLaren (captain) and George Breedt were selected for the team that went on to win the Light Tackle Billfish national tournament in Sodwana Bay.

Viviers and Moolman participated in the Heavy Tackle Billfish category at the same tournament.

In an effort to promote catch and release, awards were handed out for the most marlin and sailfish caught and released, which went to Johan Engelbrecht and Divan Breedt respectively.

Arman de Wet received an award for his 20kg prodigal son caught on a 10kg line during the Maphelane Junior Inter-Club tournament in July, which would have been a Zululand, South Africa and All Africa record had an age discrepancy not voided the catch.

St Lucia Ski Boat Club’s Top Angler award went to Neil Kerry-Smith, the Top Lady Angler honours to Brigitte Kerry-Smith, the Top Junior Angler award to Divan Breedt and the Most Improved Junior Angler to Arman de Wet.
