Putting education first

Bursaries for needy students

EDUCATION remains the only weapon which can be used to change the world.

This was the sentiment of the Chairperson of the Mkhwanazi Community Public Benefit Trust, Blessing Mkhwanazi, addressing 50 young people who converged at the University of Zululand last week for a bursaries workshop.

Mkhwanazi said they were grateful that the late iNkosi Mkhwanazi saw the need to establish a bursary fund within the trust to assist the area’s children.

‘There are many activities identified by the trust, but education is the one that touches the lives of all our people. That’s why we are investing in education in this fashion.

‘To date the bursary fund has assisted about 84 students.

‘These are not just free bursaries, but are based on merits. We started offering a 50% tuition fee, but now we are offering full tuition fees to our students.

‘We also monitor the performance of each student and if a student performs below par, we terminate the bursary,’ said Mkhwanazi.

‘We offer bursaries only to deserving students in areas aligned to specific skills needs such as medicine, agriculture, physical science, engineering, accounting, economics, IT, banking, marketing and computer sciences.

Mkhwanazi said the bursaries were intended for students residing in Nhlangenyuke, Ntuze, Nyembe, Sihuzu, Nkonjane, Ongoye Mission, Msasandla, Matholonjeni, Lugweba, KwaNdaya, eSikhaleni, Mahunu, Ngunjini, Port Durnford and Khandisa Reserve.
