Almost a thousand born on Christmas day

KZN Health spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane said at least 17 of the mothers are under the age of 18

MORE than 903 babies were born on Christmas Day this year, the highest number recorded in the Gauteng province.

213 babies including 110 boys and 103 girls were born in the province.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital recorded the highest number of births at 51.

It was followed by Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital with 28 and Dr George Mukhari Hospital with 19 babies.

In the Eastern Cape 217 babies were born, 116 girls and 101 boys. The district with the highest number of births was O R Tambo with 52 births

According to a eNCA report the Western Cape Government Health recorded 150 babies in the province by 10:00 on 26 December. In a statement released on Saturday, the department reportedly said the number included 76 boys and 74 girls.

Ninety-nine of these babies were reportedly born in the Cape Town Metropole and 51 babies were born in the rural districts. A set of twins, one boy and one girl, were reportedly born at Paarl Hospital.

It was reported that Mowbray Maternity Hospital had the most Christmas babies where 26 babies including 11 boys and 15 girls, were welcomed, followed by New Somerset Hospital with 19 births, including 9 boys and 10 girls.

The first babies were reportedly born at 00:00, one baby boy was born at Mowbray Maternity Hospital weighing 2.95 kg and 52cm in length while another baby boy was reportedly born at 00:00 at Khayelitsha weighing 2.85kg and 53 cm in length.

In Limpopo 102 babies were born including 51 boys and 51 girls. The Vhembe district had the highest number of births with 57 and the Capricorn district following with 38. The first baby born was at Matiyani Clinic in Vhembe at 00.50am. It was a boy

In the North West, 96 babies were born including 44 boys and 42 girls.

This was followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 95 babies including 50 girls and 45 boys. KZN Health spokesperson Agiza Hlongwane said at least 17 of the mothers are under the age of 18, including  a 14 year-old, three 15 year-olds, one 16 year-old and twelve 17 year-olds.

In the Free State 30 babies were born including 19 boys and 11 girls. Pelonomi Private Hospital in Bloemfontein had the highest number of births with five. The first baby born at 00:10 at Pelonomi, was a boy.
