Three actual driving offences that will land you in jail

The RTMC has come under fire for issuing a press statement listing nine traffic offences you could be arrested for

THE Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has come under fire from various sectors after releasing a press statement listing nine traffic offences drivers could be arrested for this festive season.

The move by RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi has been described as ‘irresponsible’ and ‘bully-boy tactics’.

However, conflicting reports now only serve to create confusion among drivers.

So here’s what you can actually, and lawfully, be arrested for:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol (even if you are only sitting in the driver’s seat with the engine running)
  • Reckless or negligent driving
  • Exceeding the speed limit by 40km/h or more

Overtaking on a solid white line in the face of oncoming traffic could be determined as reckless and negligent, so drivers are urged to have patience and wait until overtaking is safe.
