Temperatures set to soar today

5 tips to beat the heat today

ACCORDING to KZN Fire Protection Association, temperatures are set to soar between 11am and 5pm today.

Zululand, uThungulu, uMzinyathi, uMgungundlovu, iLembe and uMkhanyakude districts will experience extremely hot temperatures.

Empangeni will reach a high or 42°C while Jozini will peak at 43°C with a 10% chance of rain.

5 tips to beat the heat

1. Dress for the weather

Wear lightweight, light coloured clothing while out in the heat. Light colours reflect sunlight and can keep you cooler. Hats are also a good idea, as are umbrellas if available.

2. Drink lots of water

Drink lots and lots of water when you have to be out in the heat. It’s a great idea to keep a bottle of water or juice with you at all times. Avoid alcohol and caffeine which can dehydrate you.

3. Slow down

Take lots of breaks and avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day. If you have to get out in the sun and work, try to pick the coolest parts of the day.

4. Stay in doors

You’re safest indoors. Your best bet is to find an air-conditioned location for the duration. Lower the blinds and close the curtains. Avoid using your stove for cooking.

5. Protect those most at risk

Heat-related illness can affect anyone, but some people are particularly at risk. If you live with or know people who fit into any of these categories, check on them frequently during hot days, and make sure they’re staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous exercise, dressing for the weather and finding the best accommodations possible:

  • young children
  • the elderly
  • outdoor laborers
  • the chronically ill
  • pets
