Reservoir fault finally receives attention

Ongoing water infrastructure problem for 26 years in Empangeni.

AN irate resident is fed up with uMhlathuze Municipality’s alleged lack of concern regarding the maintenance of water infrastructure.

The resident, who is also a municipal employee, has periodically recorded large amounts of water rushing down the storm water pipes through his backyard.

Having lived at the address for 26 years, he claims the problem is an ongoing one, with water sometimes flowing for days at a time.

The latest overflow began again on 11 November.

The pipes channel the water to a nearby stream, which stretches from Piet Retief to Gemini Road.

‘It’s a matter of service delivery. I don’t think the municipality is doing proper maintenance of these facilities,’ he said.

Municipal sources confirmed there was an issue with the valve at the reservoir, but said the problem had been addressed last Monday by replacing the faulty valve.

Since the valve’s settings need to be fine-tuned to the reservoir’s parameters to work efficiently, the problem might last into this week.
