Mzingazi resident dies during robbery

Richards Bay police on the hunt for six suspects.

AN MZINGAZI resident who went to investigate a commotion outside his property in the early hours on Tuesday morning unknowingly wandered into a robbery in progress and was murdered.

The 49-year-old was shot during the incident in which his tenant, leasing a shop building on his premises was being attacked by six robbers.

The shopkeeper was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Police have not made any arrests and are appealing to members of the public who may have information relating to the suspects to contact Captain Mkhabela on 035 9012423.

Meanwhile, Mzingazi CPF Chairperson Sharon Mdletshe said the community is shocked by the tragedy as the deceased was a long time Mzingazi resident and well known in the area.

‘The people are up in arms over the crime that is taking place in the area with innocent people being gunned down at their homes.

‘Residents have asked for an urgent public meeting with police to try and find ways to put a stop to the murders, attempted murders and robberies.

‘Last month a teacher was gunned down in his home and we have noted an increase in residents being attacked, stabbings and shops being the targets of robberies.

‘Action must be taken to address this problem,’ said Mdletshe.
