Taxi takes plunge at Bay Hall beach

Minibus gets stuck after speeding on beach in Richards Bay.

YET another vehicle got stuck at the beach opposite Pelican Island on Sunday while recklessly chasing into the water to splash youngsters swimming nearby.

According to witness, Fred Lubbe, the driver of a taxi minibus sped his vehicle ‘at a hell of a speed’ towards the breakwater where it sank deep into the slack soil.

‘It was utterly stupid and dangerous to drive there with people in the water close by,’ said Lubbe.

‘I decided to report it to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and a conservation officer, Frans Mthembu, arrived in a matter of 10 minutes.’

After the Ezemvelo team pulled the vehicle out of the water using a 4×4, Mthembu took the driver’s details and vehicle registration.

The case was reported to the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Pietermaritzburg to buckle down on the incessant driving on the beach.

‘We await the Department’s decision on how we need to proceed with addressing this serious situation,’ said Mthembu.

‘This irresponsible behaviour needs to stop.

‘Driving on the sand not only puts people’s lives at risk, but causes environmental damage and harms beach-dwelling wildlife like crabs.

‘We need a mandate to start confiscating vehicles off this municipal property.’
