Christmas shindig at local orphanage

One eSikhaleni community member's efforts to make a difference brings joy to hundreds of orphans.

CHILDREN of the Celukuthala Community Development Orphanage in eSikhaleni enjoyed a fun day and Christmas party on Saturday hosted by Zululand Observer journalist Wellington Makwakwa.

He visited the orphanage on Mandela Day where a group of local deejays donated food parcels and this motivated him to take on the mission to host a Christmas cheer project and collect clothing, toys and food parcels for the children.

With the support of family, friends, local businesses, charities and a host of community projects, donations streamed in and the children were treated to a line-up of entertainment, games, face painting, jumping castles, sweet hampers and lunch.

Local artists also joined the event and kept the children entertained with live music performances.

Makwakwa thanked all the sponsors and donors for their contributions in helping him to make a difference in the children’s lives.

‘We had planned the Christmas party for about 100 children, however children from the community also joined in and we eventually had to cater for more than 250 children.

‘Thanks to the overflow of generosity we managed to cater for them all. It was such a wonderful experience to see the children having fun, laughing, dancing and enjoying the activities.’
